Themed as a “Brand New World,” LEO ensured every element of the ILC had a purpose. Although it was an intimate gathering with 93 attendees, the logistics, strategy, and execution were paramount. Even the ribbons LEO used to tie tags were part of the grander story of sustainability, unity, and history. Nando’s wanted to celebrate their rich South African history, but also uplift the history of locales of the newly opened Nando’s store locations – namely in the American South. LEO planned each of the council’s events to highlight these rich cultures, and present ways Nando’s leaders could continue to honor them.

LEO crafted the ILC to be a narrative experience throughout the event. The Opening Session introduced the theme, captivated the audience, and truly made the event a grand slam.  The stage was Winston Village, an old paper factory. Its groves of trees were no longer cut down and turned into pulp but allowed to flourish into an outdoor theater. Cobalt blue bottles clung on each trees’ branches, an ancient ritual from 9^th Century Congo, brought to America by enslaved people who believed they could capture evil spirits. Taking the stage was Jon Goode, an Emmy-nominated spoken word poet from Virginia. He began to speak of roots, of trees, of branches and how it is from these that the future is built. He introduced a cast of harlequin characters: The ghost of Richard T Wilson, the namesake of the paper mill, recounted the history of the land. Then came a jovial chef who explained the tomato pies and Hoppin’ John sandwiches, local foods being served to the guests. Finally, a gnarled old storyteller described the evil spirits trapped in the trees, and the hardships of the people who worked the land long ago.

During this history of the past, LEO also ensured the Opening Session fertilized the future. Sustainable solutions were used throughout the ILC, using recycled materials wherever possible, like the décor and silverware. Extra food was donated. Signage and stage production were all made to be reusable. No unnecessary plastic was used during the entire ILC event. LEO wove the message of sustainability throughout every feature of the event.

Originally planned for 2020, the ILC needed the Solutions People at LEO to assist throughout COVID challenges – booking, cancelling, and rescheduling – until it was safe enough for the in-person event to happen. Furthermore, the council took place outside, in South Carolina, in June – so heat and humidity were a major factor. LEO constantly monitored the weather to make pinpoint changes to load-in, production, and execution of the event. LEO ensured not only the safety, but the comfort of attendees throughout record high temperatures.
