Nobody likes going to the hospital. Especially a child. But going to the hospital to celebrate the grand opening of a brand new, $340 million, 610,000 square-foot Children’s Hospital equipped with the latest advances in caring for the children of Memphis? Now that’s a celebration we could kick our heels up for.

LEO designed, coordinated and implemented a public celebration for more than 2,000 people on a tight urban site with a fully operational hospital next door. And all smack dab in the middle of the 100-degree heat of Memphis in June. But the party must go on. And it did. The celebration featured a parade with more than 300 participants, an open house and tours. Gordon and Maria from Sesame Street narrated the parade while floats and banner groups represented Le Bonheur’s history and stakeholders. After a short ceremony and video, hospital executives unfurled a 100-foot ribbon officially opening the doors to the public. Applause.

In order to keep the celebratory vibe going even in the summer heat, LEO provided guests with plenty of water and frozen towels. No need for a hospital visit at this hospital visit. Guests also received a Le Bonheur pop-up book, commemorative fan, and custom screen-printed cookie. Detailed plans, maps, additional parking with shuttles, and communication to guests and hospital patients ensured smooth arrival and way-finding. And through it all, our 50-person on-site team kept its cool.

LEO successfully helped Le Bonheur make some noise. And the media, well, they returned the favor. The Grand Opening event resulted in more than four hours of local TV coverage; 56 print media stories, including three front-page articles; 975 hospital tours; a 24 percent increase in Facebook fans during this period; and more than $750,000 in donations for the week. Now those were the kind of results we didn’t mind waiting for.
